Reddit: The strengths and weaknesses of a budding advertising giant

Reddit brings together two elements that are becoming increasingly rare in conventional social networks: authentic conversations and genuine search intent.

In the Web 2.0 ecosystem, Reddit was until recently considered a niche advertising channel. However, the renowned online forum community has become an absolutely indispensable piece of the digital advertising puzzle. After all, we’re talking about a platform that provides a home for two elements that are increasingly scarce in conventional social networks: authentic conversations and genuine search intent.

The combination of these two characteristics explains why Reddit saw a 74% increase in its advertising revenue in 2025, soaring to $2.1 billion. Furthermore, during the first quarter of 2026, Reddit maintained this positive trend, with its advertising revenue growing by another 74%.

This recent surge in Reddit’s growth (with nearly 127 million people using the platform daily worldwide) is largely thanks to Google. Since the internet giant implemented changes to its search engine in 2014, Reddit threads have increasingly appeared in Google’s organic search results and also in the search engine’s AI Overviews.

When gathering information to answer user questions, AI systems tend to favor Reddit threads as raw material. In this sense, Reddit is not only vital as an advertising platform but also helps brands remain visible in the era of generative AI.

Reddit’s Strengths as an Advertising Channel

As an advertising channel, Reddit works particularly well when campaigns target the top and middle of the sales funnel (boosting awareness, consideration, trust, and conversation).

Even so, Reddit is not yet on par with Meta and Google in terms of pure performance marketing. And in metrics like CTR and CPA, this platform generally delivers less efficient results than its direct competitors in the digital advertising sector.

Reddit’s appeal, however, lies not so much in its massive scale as in the depth of the topics it offers users (and ultimately, brands). Extraordinarily specific communities are born on this platform through the creation of «subreddits,» and this is definitely valuable for brands operating in fields like fintech, technology, gaming, and sports (where consumers typically gather information before making a purchase decision).

Even so, on Reddit, brands must participate as if they were members of the community they have chosen to join (therefore, they cannot act as traditional broadcasters and must adhere to different communication codes).

For brands, one of Reddit’s most outstanding aspects is that the organic conversations that take place there often end up feeding AI responses, influencing how AI systems perceive brands, and ultimately translating into valuable consumer recommendations.

In the age of AI, SEO strategy is therefore becoming much closer to community management and conversational reputation (making it crucial for brands to ignite credible conversations).

As an advertising platform, Reddit possesses very specific characteristics that make it absolutely unique.

Despite its undeniable strengths, Reddit also presents brands with a series of risks and limitations:

-Less scalability.

-A less controllable environment from a brand safety perspective.

-Greater operational effort.

-Often fierce criticism from the community.

-Specific creative assets for different subreddits.

For brands, Reddit is a kind of scalpel that works with exceptional precision, but in inexperienced hands, it can still cause accidental cuts (which must be considered when venturing onto this platform).

What seems clear is that Reddit has definitively shed its experimental channel label to become a must-have from a strategic planning perspective. However, Reddit is not a typical Web 2.0 platform, and to succeed there, it’s not enough to simply copy (without any revision) what has already been done on other channels. After all, we’re talking about a platform whose advertising model has more in common with public relations and community building than with traditional display advertising, and where, to fully exploit the opportunities available, you need to immerse yourself in the prevailing Reddit culture.
