Anthropic achieves the «overtaking» and surpasses OpenAI as the most valuable AI startup in the world

Anthropic has received 65 billion from investors and the company is currently valued at 965 billion.

Following its latest funding round, the US AI startup Anthropic has achieved a true milestone: overtaking its rival OpenAI in market valuation. Anthropic has secured $65 billion from investors, and the parent company of the Claude chatbot is now valued at $965 billion (up from $380 billion in February of this year). OpenAI, meanwhile, currently has a market capitalization of $852 billion.

The new investment capital obtained by Anthropic in its latest funding round will be used to expand the company’s cloud computing capacity to meet the growing demand for the Claude AI chatbot. Unlike OpenAI, Anthropic has focused from the outset on enterprise clients rather than individual users.

Amazon participated in Anthropic’s latest funding round, announcing last April that it would invest up to $25 billion in the AI startup. In return, the company, led by Dario Amodei, has committed to investing over $100 billion in Amazon’s cloud computing technology over the next ten years.

Beyond Amazon, which contributed $5 billion, other investors in Anthropic’s latest funding round included Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, Sequoia Capital, Capital Group, Coatue, D1 Capital Partners, GIC, ICONIQ, and XN.

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Opus 4.8, its most advanced AI to date.

Earlier this month, Anthropic announced annual revenues of $47 billion, a figure the company revised upwards, representing a significant increase from the $30 billion it reported just a few weeks ago. Based on these substantial figures, Anthropic is currently growing at a rate five times faster than last year. According to the company, this revenue growth is being strongly driven by AI programming tools like Claude Code.

The announcement of Anthropic’s new funding round coincided with the unveiling of Claude Opus 4.8, which boasts being the company’s most powerful AI to date and features significant improvements in both agent and programming capabilities.

Anthropic is currently involved in a legal dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense. The company initially refused to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to its technology for military purposes due to the security concerns it raised. The Department of Defense responded by classifying Anthropic as a «supply chain security risk.» Following this highly publicized skirmish, OpenAI reached an agreement with the U.S. government.

Meanwhile, Mythos, Anthropic’s new AI model, is under scrutiny from governments and financial institutions due to the serious risks this technology entails. Critics fear that criminals or government actors could use Mythos to carry out cyberattacks. Mythos has not yet been officially launched by Anthropic, but U.S. authorities and a handful of organizations have already had access to the tool in a trial phase.

Both Anthropic and OpenAI plan to make their stock market debuts later this year. And the IPO of another AI company, SpaceX (the parent company of xAI), is scheduled for June 12. Elon Musk’s company expects to achieve a record valuation of $1.75 trillion in its initial public offering (IPO). If this figure is confirmed, it would be the largest IPO in history.
