Once the hype has subsided, AI will leave behind a major structural change that will have a lasting impact for decades.

The long shadow of hype (likely exaggerated) looms over AI, likely distorting the technology’s true relevance. However, despite the clamorous noise surrounding AI, this technology brings with it a very serious structural change. This was the assertion of investor and technology expert Philipp Klöckner in a presentation given last Wednesday at the Online Marketing Rockstars (OMR) festival in Hamburg, Germany.

Several factors overlap in the perception of AI, making it difficult to conduct a realistic (and noise-free) assessment of this technology, according to Klöckner. First, never before has a technology been adopted so rapidly worldwide as AI. And never before have large technology companies invested so much money in the infrastructure supporting this technology. Yet, simultaneously, «there has rarely been such a gap between what AI actually does today and what people imagine it does.»

The divide between the actual usefulness of AI and the «powers» people attribute to this technology is exacerbated by the consistency of two diametrically opposed narratives. On the one hand, there is an almost messianic vision of AI that believes this technology is capable of solving all problems and creating true abundance. On the other hand, there is an apocalyptic vision of AI whose proponents argue that this technology will massively destroy jobs, render flesh-and-blood human beings useless, and even escape the control of its creators. The problem? Both narratives are overly simplistic and fail to accurately portray the true reality of AI.

What lies beyond the AI »hype»?

What seems clear, says Klöckner, is that despite the «hype,» AI is by no means a passing fad. This is corroborated by its explosive user growth, its integration into numerous everyday products, the rapid improvements taking place in AI models, and above all, the magnitude of the investments this technology attracts. Companies like OpenAI, Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia are investing absolutely colossal sums in AI. And if they are spending billions of dollars on this technology, it’s not just for marketing purposes, but because they are genuinely convinced that AI will fundamentally transform the digital economy.

According to Klöckner, AI is currently grappling with a significant bottleneck, but this bottleneck is more related to infrastructure (chips, power consumption, computing power, and data access) than to the underlying concept of this technology.

Drawing parallels between the current AI hype and the dot-com bubble of 2000, Klöckner believes that both scenarios are characterized by a lot of noise, but beneath all that noise, a very real revolution is brewing. And just as happened a quarter of a century ago, many startups will likely disappear, there will be disappointments, and some promises will dissolve like a sugar cube, but this will not prevent AI from continuing to advance and eventually becoming deeply embedded in almost every area of activity.

When conducting a truly objective analysis of AI, Klöckner insists that it’s crucial to highlight what this technology already does very well today (linguistic tasks, synthesis, contextual search, computer-assisted programming, document automation, content generation, customer support, and information analysis) while also acknowledging its shortcomings (we’re talking about a technology that often makes mistakes, struggles with reasoning in complex tasks, and remains heavily reliant on context and human oversight). «Many AI models are incredibly impressive and appear intelligent, but they are still statistically limited systems in many respects,» emphasizes the investor and technology expert.
