OpenAI terminates its exclusivity agreement with Microsoft and is already eyeing other «players»
In the future, OpenAI will be able to sell its technology to Microsoft’s rivals in the cloud computing field, such as Amazon Web Services or Google.
OpenAI and Microsoft have decided to renegotiate their existing collaboration agreement. Under the new terms, the software giant will relinquish its exclusivity on exploiting OpenAI’s AI models in the cloud. This effectively means that in the future, the parent company of ChatGPT will be able to sell its technology to Microsoft’s cloud computing rivals, such as Amazon Web Services and Google.
Microsoft will, however, retain its status as OpenAI’s primary cloud provider and will continue to benefit from the AI systems of the company led by Sam Altman until 2032.
Another change brought about by the new agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft is that the software giant will no longer receive a share of the revenue generated by the American startup through the sale of its cloud products to the multinational headed by Satya Nadella.
Following the announcement of changes to the OpenAI and Microsoft alliance, Microsoft’s stock price plummeted 1.4%. Microsoft was one of the first companies to provide financial support to OpenAI, having invested $13 billion to date.
Based on OpenAI’s current valuation of $850 billion, Microsoft’s stake in the company would be worth approximately $230 billion.
The new agreement will give OpenAI and Microsoft greater freedom to forge collaborations with third parties.
Among analysts, the restructuring of the OpenAI and Microsoft alliance has been generally well received. Experts believe that overcoming the long-standing uncertainty surrounding this alliance (which has recently been subject to constant back-and-forth) will ultimately benefit both partners. Furthermore, although Microsoft will lose its exclusivity agreement with OpenAI, the company will retain control over the intellectual property rights to its partner’s technology for another six years (in addition to retaining a significant stake in the startup).
Thanks to its exclusive agreement with OpenAI, Microsoft has been able to rapidly expand its AI products and has also secured rights to the latest developments from ChatGPT’s parent company in exchange for providing its partner with computing power (something that is absolutely vital in the AI field).
For OpenAI, its alliance with Microsoft has been absolutely key to fueling its rapid growth in the AI sector. Currently, however, OpenAI works with several cloud providers to meet the increasing demand for computing power and to offer its products globally.
The new agreement is launched with the ultimate goal of simplifying the existing cooperation between OpenAI and Microsoft. Thanks to their new alliance, both companies will benefit from greater certainty in their future plans, be in a position to improve their respective AI platforms, and also have more freedom to forge collaborations with third parties.
In February of this year, OpenAI announced a strategic alliance with Amazon, which reportedly prompted intense scrutiny from Microsoft, which believed the agreement could conflict with its exclusivity agreement with the company that developed ChatGPT.
