When will AI overtake humans? It already has, according to Sam Altman.
Sam Altman would be surprised if by 2030 there wasn’t a model that surpassed real people in terms of capabilities.
Artificial general intelligence (AGI), the intelligence that equals or surpasses that of real people, is OpenAI’s particular object of desire. And the achievement of this goal, which seemed so distant just a few years ago, is looming ever closer on the horizon, so much so that AGI could already be upon us. This is what Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, suggested in a recent interview with the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag.
«I truly believe that in many ways, GPT-5 is already smarter than me and many other people. GPT-5 can do a lot of things, although obviously there are also things that humans find more or less easy, which this model is not yet capable of doing. I think progress in the field of AI will continue to be dizzying in the short term,» says Altman.
And given the absolutely frantic pace at which AI development is currently advancing, the CEO of OpenAI would be surprised if by 2030 there wasn’t a model that surpassed real-life humans in capabilities.
Sam Altman is optimistic about the future of AI
When asked about the job destruction that AI could ultimately bring, Altman predicts that within 30 years, there will indeed be many changes in the labor market. Nevertheless, regardless of the arrival of AI, many changes will inevitably occur in this field of activity in 30 years, he asserts. «There will indeed be professions that will change completely. AI is capable, after all, of performing some tasks better. And it simultaneously frees people to remain the center of attention because it doesn’t actually take away from their role,» he says. «I think every generation uses the ideas and new tools that previous generations make available to them to thrive. And I’m sure my children will too,» Altman told Bild am Sonntag.
The CEO of OpenAI is perfectly aware that his eminently optimistic vision of AI clashes head-on with those who are more critical of this technology and, in fact, hold it responsible for apocalyptic scenarios. Altman insists that in recent years there has been much speculation about what the relationship between AI and humans will be like in the future. And of all these inevitably hypothetical stories, he prefers to focus on the one once imagined by Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI. Sutskever once prophesied that in the future there would be one or several AIs that would dispense an almost paternal affection to real people. «Obviously, AI can have consequences that we sometimes don’t understand, but I think that’s precisely why it’s so important to instill human values into this technology,» he emphasizes.
