OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.1, the latest update to its language model, which promises to transform the ChatGPT user experience for both everyday conversations and more complex tasks. The update is notable for offering greater personalization, clearer dialogue, and more robust reasoning, and is now available in early access for paid users.
Among the key new features of GPT-5.1 is the introduction of two complementary models:
-GPT-5.1 Instant, designed for quick and concise responses with an accessible, conversational tone.
-GPT-5.1 Thinking, which enables deeper reasoning, adjusting its pace and offering clearer explanations on complex topics.
ChatGPT automatically selects the most appropriate model based on the request, providing a smoother and more adaptive experience.
Eight Personalities and More Control Over the Conversation
Another notable innovation is the expanded personality system, with eight preset tones that users can choose from to personalize the assistant’s speech: Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Sincere, Quirky, Cynical, Nerd, and Default. It’s also possible to adjust the warmth, conciseness, and even the use of emojis, and ChatGPT can suggest changing its tone during the conversation based on the context.
GPT-5.1 also improves instruction following, adapting more accurately to specific requests and offering more thoughtful reasoning for complex tasks. The advancements include improvements in math, programming, and logic, with more robust performance on platforms like AIME 2025 and Codeforces.
As previously reported, the rollout of GPT-5.1 is gradual. Pro, Plus, Go, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users already have early access, while all other users, including those on the free version, will receive the update soon. GPT-5.1 will replace GPT-5 as the default model, although the latter will remain available during a transition period.
