OpenAI doesn’t want Google to get ahead and is launching a new AI model: GPT-5.2
GPT-5.2 prides itself on being better than its predecessor at programming software, finding information, and executing tasks that require following multiple steps.
Just a few days ago, OpenAI declared a red alert within the company due to the threat posed by Google and its Gemini 3 model to the crown jewel of the company led by Sam Altman: ChatGPT.
OpenAI fears that the «superpowers» housed within Gemini 3 (which would easily surpass ChatGPT in key performance indicators) could end up overshadowing the famous AI chatbot, and so they have rushed to launch a new AI model (the same one that powers their flagship product).
This new model is called GPT-5.2 and boasts superior performance compared to its predecessor in software programming, information retrieval, generating spreadsheets, creating graphical interfaces, and executing tasks that require multiple steps.
GPT-5.2, which is already available in ChatGPT, is, according to OpenAI, particularly well-suited for use in professional environments. The US startup claims that GPT-5.2 outperforms or matches the best real-world professionals across various fields (those with the greatest impact on US GDP) in 70.9% of comparisons. This proportion, however, was only 38.8% in the previous model.
OpenAI’s new AI model is now available on ChatGPT for paid users.
OpenAI’s new AI model, which is less prone to inaccuracies than its predecessor, has arrived on ChatGPT in three distinct versions: Instant (specializing in clear and immediate responses), Thinking (which takes extra time to reason through responses and tackle more complex tasks), and Pro (the most intelligent and reliable model, and therefore the most suitable for tasks with an extra level of difficulty).
GPT-5.2 is currently available only on paid plans, and therefore, for now, only those subscribed to ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise can benefit from this model. It’s also worth noting that the predecessor to this model, GPT-5.1, will remain available for three months, and once this transition period ends, it will be permanently replaced by GPT-5.2.
OpenAI, which spearheaded the rise of generative AI with ChatGPT approximately three years ago, fears that Google will eventually dethrone it in a field where Sam Altman’s company has always been considered a pioneer. Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3, has, after all, been met with widespread praise from experts.
ChatGPT boasts over 800 million weekly users, while Gemini has more than 650 million monthly users.
Even though ChatGPT remains ahead of Gemini, some analysts and observers believe that Google is more likely to succeed in the long run in the AI arena because its products have been firmly embedded in the daily lives of millions of users worldwide for years.
