Slop Evader, the search engine that allows browsing only through content published before the AI era

Slop Evader es una extensión que permite navegar solo por contenido publicado antes de la era de la IA, ofreciendo una web más humana y confiable.

Australian artist and technologist Tega Brain has launched Slop Evader, a browser extension that allows users to browse only content published before November 30, 2022—that is, before the rise of ChatGPT and the explosion of AI-generated content. The tool is available for Chrome and Firefox and focuses on platforms like YouTube, Reddit, Stack Exchange, and MumsNet, where AI has left its most visible mark.

With Slop Evader, Brain proposes a return to the «human» web: users can filter information to access only material created by real people, avoiding the avalanche of synthetic articles, automated summaries, manipulated images, and content designed to feed algorithms. The extension works in the background, limiting search results and providing a calmer and more reliable experience, albeit at the expense of immediacy and up-to-date news.

Slop Evader allows users to filter searches to show only pre-AI content.

The artist explains that the tool doesn’t seek to «detect» AI, but rather to directly circumvent it, making it clear that its objective is to offer a different browsing rhythm, where human authorship prevails over digital saturation. «Automatically generated content increases the user’s cognitive load,» Brain asserts. «Every interaction becomes a constant verification of authenticity, generating digital anxiety even in everyday tasks.»

Although Slop Evader has obvious limitations, such as not allowing access to recent information or websites created after 2022, Brain conceives of it as a provocation and a social experiment. It aims to inspire a debate about how Big Tech has transformed the internet and how users can demand more authentic experiences. According to the creator, the solution depends not only on individual extensions, but also on collective changes and regulations that guarantee a more human and trustworthy internet.

With Slop Evader, the web takes a step back in time to advance in the quality of experience, giving way to a tool that blends nostalgia, criticism of mass automation, and a reminder that not everything that glitters on the web is real.
