OpenAI’s love affair with sex ends in disappointment: ChatGPT will not have an «adult mode»

OpenAI has decided to suspend the arrival of «adult mode» to ChatGPT «indefinitely» due to pressure from employees and investors.

OpenAI, which just a couple of days ago unexpectedly decided to bury its AI-powered video generation tool Sora, has also decided to put the final nail in the coffin for another of its most talked-about projects: ChatGPT’s «adult mode.»

The company, led by Sam Altman, has decided to suspend the arrival of «adult mode» to ChatGPT «indefinitely.» According to the Financial Times, OpenAI has shelved this «adult mode» (which involved the addition of sexual content to ChatGPT) due to pressure from employees and investors, who feared that this feature would put the company in a difficult position because of the potentially harmful effects of AI-generated erotic content.

Heavy internal discussions have reportedly taken place within OpenAI in recent months regarding the launch of «adult mode» on ChatGPT, which was initially planned for the first quarter of 2026 but was subsequently delayed due to time constraints.

The «adult mode» has been a source of controversy since OpenAI announced the feature last October. This has ultimately led the company to indefinitely suspend the «adult mode» with no specific release date in sight.

OpenAI wants to focus on more productivity-oriented projects.

The company apparently encountered difficulties training its AI models, which are specifically designed to prevent the generation of erotic content and eliminate behaviors such as bestiality and incest (which directly contradicts the philosophy of its «adult mode»).

OpenAI, lacking «empirical evidence» on the long-term effects of sexually explicit conversations with AI chatbots, wanted to undertake research to analyze such effects. Now, it reportedly wants to focus on productivity-oriented tools and abandon secondary projects like Sora and ChatGPT’s «adult mode.»

The indefinite suspension of ChatGPT’s «adult mode» was also reportedly influenced by investor concerns, particularly the controversy surrounding Grok, xAI’s AI model, which recently generated nude images of real people and minors.

ChatGPT’s «adult mode» also reportedly caused unease among OpenAI employees, who insisted on leaving the project to avoid encouraging the replacement of genuine human connections genuine due to the «fake» nature of the connections mediated by AI.
