OpenAI’s meteoric rise: startup reaches record valuation of $500 billion
OpenAI is now worth $200 billion more than it was last April, when the startup closed a funding round.
The furious AI hype is having a truly soothing effect on the company that largely fueled that hype: OpenAI. ChatGPT’s parent company has just been crowned the world’s most valuable startup after reaching a record valuation of $500 billion (approximately $426 billion).
Based on figures floated in the recent sale of OpenAI employee shares to investors, the company has reportedly surpassed $500 billion in valuation, according to Bloomberg. In this sense, OpenAI is currently worth $200 billion more than it was last April, when the startup closed a funding round.
Following this latest milestone, OpenAI is currently the most valuable private company in the world, followed by SpaceX, the aerospace company owned by South African billionaire Elon Musk. The latter company was recently valued at approximately $350 billion during a share buyback.
AI is becoming an increasingly competitive market.
As the developer of ChatGPT, OpenAI is a pioneer in the field of AI chatbots and also has products focused on image and video generation. Since it is not publicly traded, investor access to OpenAI is still limited.
Despite having largely opened the floodgates of the AI boom with the launch of ChatGPT approximately three years ago, OpenAI operates in an increasingly competitive market that also includes major «Big Tech» companies such as Meta, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Alibaba. Furthermore, startups are also emerging in this market whose free and open-source AI models could eventually become rivals to OpenAI.
